Broken link checker

Every link on a page, tested.

Enter a page address and every link and image on it is tested: broken ones, the ones that redirect, and the ones pointing at deleted products. Up to 150 per page, with the link text so you can find each one.

What it checks

  • Every link and image on the page
  • 404s, server errors and dead domains
  • Links that redirect, and where they end up
  • Links to your own store and to other sites

Free, no signup. Nothing is stored.

Reading the results

What each number is telling you.

A report you cannot interpret is just a longer way of saying something is wrong.

  • Broken

The link returns an error: 404 for a page that no longer exists, 5xx for a server problem, or no answer at all. A visitor who clicks it hits a dead end.

  • Redirects

The link works but takes a detour through one or more redirects. Worth updating to the final address, especially in menus and footers.

  • Couldn't verify

Some sites, social networks especially, refuse automated checks. Open these yourself before changing anything; most of them work.

  • On this site or another

Broken links to your own store are yours to fix today. Broken links to other sites mean the page you linked to has moved or gone.

Why it matters

The mechanism, not the platitude.

  • 01

    Deleted products leave dead ends

Remove a product and every menu, collection description and blog post that linked to it now points at a 404. Shopify doesn't clean those up for you.

  • 02

    Crawlers stop at broken links

Each 404 is a request Google spends on nothing, and a link that no longer passes anything to the page it was meant for.

  • 03

    Customers notice before you do

A broken link in a menu or on a product page costs a sale quietly. Nobody writes in to say the size guide 404s; they leave.

Common findings

What this usually turns up, and the fix.

Four problems that account for most of what this tool reports on a Shopify store.

The finding

Links to deleted products

Why it happens

Products removed without a redirect, still linked from blog posts and collection descriptions.

The fix

Add a URL redirect in Shopify from the old product to its closest replacement or its collection.

The finding

Menu links that redirect

Why it happens

A collection or page was renamed and Shopify added a redirect, but the menu still points at the old address.

The fix

Update the menu item to the new address so every visit skips the hop.

The finding

Dead links to other sites

Why it happens

Suppliers, press coverage and social profiles move or close over time.

The fix

Update the link to the new address, or remove it.

The finding

Broken images

Why it happens

Images hot-linked from another site or removed from Files while still used in a page.

The fix

Upload the image to Shopify and use that copy.

Limits

What this will not tell you.

Every tool has a boundary. Knowing where this one ends is what keeps you from over-reading it.

  • It checks one page at a time, up to 150 links and images. The app checks every page of the store, every week.
  • Some sites block automated checks, so a link marked couldn't verify may work fine in a browser.
